SCM 608 - Sports History & Culture


We examine the historical development of sports in the United States from a societal and cultural viewpoint. The course provides opportunity to examine the relationship between sports and nationalism, sports and politics, sports and the economy, sports and societal change, sports and gender, and sports and American expansion. Course content includes documentaries and discussions about the Black Sox scandal, how Babe Ruth saved baseball, the Negro Leagues, Jackie Robinson’s integration into baseball, boxers Jack Johnson, Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali, Donald Trump’s USFL vs. NFL, the Miracle on Ice as well as current trends in sports.
