HW 150 - Introduction to Exercise & Health Science Applications


This course will provide an overview of the comprehensive careers and areas of study related to sports and health science. Students will examine the basic science underlying exercise and sport, as well as their implications on health, wellness, and fitness levels. The course will introduce foundational musculoskeletal anatomy, basic systems functional anatomy, and principles of physiology to describe the human body’s processes at rest, during and in response to exercise, and as a result of exercise. Course content will highlight the rationale for and the benefits of exercise and training regimens. Exercise and fitness programming recommendations, including special population considerations, will be discussed. Students will explore the fallacy behind training myths, the risks of performance-enhancing drugs, and the usefulness of ergogenic aids in sports and exercise. Students will apply concepts learned through weekly hands-on and applied lab exercises. Two hours lecture, two-hour lab.
