As healthcare continues to need workforce development, especially in the nursing profession, there has been a concerted effort to develop meaningful graduate programs to support the need for qualified nursing workforce.
The Master’s of Science degree has two distinct programs: Health Care Organizational Leadership or Nursing Education. The programs are committed to supporting students’ life-long learning journey through the pursuit of an advanced graduate degree that has applicability to real-life and for graduates to advance their careers. The courses are designed to foster ethical decision making starting with the core classes and continue throughout. The programs require students to complete 510 clinical practice hours that support the University’s mission for graduates to engage in the community and provide service.
The Master’s of Science degree with a focus in Health Care Organizational Leadership is designed to prepare nurses for an advanced leadership role as a nurse leader, nurse manager, or nurse executive in a variety of healthcare settings. The program is grounded in national organization’s competencies formed for nurse managers, nurse executives, and advanced nursing roles. The 38-credit curriculum offers theoretical courses and leadership focused practica.
The Master’s of Science degree with a focus in Nursing Education is designed to prepare nurses for an advanced leadership role as a nurse educator in academic or staff development settings. The program is grounded in national organization’s competencies formed for nurse educators, professional development practitioners, and advanced nursing roles. The 40-credit curriculum offers theoretical courses, and advanced clinical and education focused practica.
Mission
The Department of Nursing will provide high quality, accessible educational experiences that challenge and empower students to become nurse leaders working at the forefront of healthcare. We are committed to preparing students who are liberally educated, clinically competent, and will be compassionate, empathetic and ethical professionals. Iona’s nursing program, consistent with Iona University’s mission, will provide an educational environment that embraces intellectual inquiry, commitment to excellence, service to others, and an appreciation for inclusion and diversity.
Goals
The Department of Nursing goals are to:
- Prepare competent nurses who are morally reflective and critical thinking professionals that are contributing, collaborative members of the healthcare team.
- Promote excellence, innovation, and creativity in teaching, scholarship, and practice.
- Engage in service to the community and profession of nursing.
- Generate and disseminate knowledge through scholarly inquiry and research that advances nursing science.
