Chair: B. Gaines; Professors Emeriti: J. Carpenter, L. Evered, V. Stanionis; Visiting Professor: C. Beynis; Associate Professors: B. GainesS. Krishnan, M. Smith; Assistant Professors: L. Barnes, O. Sweeney; Clinical Lecturers: A. Beran, T. Roff

Objectives

Mathematics

Iona’s mathematics programs will prepare you to make an impact in some of today’s most challenging fields - and move your own career forward in the direction that interests you.

In addition to gaining a solid foundation in mathematical methods and techniques, you will develop the logical and analytical thinking skills that will enable you to become a valued problem-solver within a broad range of industries.

Iona’s mathematics curriculum emphasizes the three major fields of study, algebra, analysis and applied mathematics, while giving you the chance to delve more deeply into an area of personal interest. Students graduating with a major in Mathematics will be able to:

  • Apply mathematical tools to problem solving, including recognizing mathematics in the real world, and estimating when appropriate.
  • Use appropriately the language of mathematics.
  • Follow logical analysis, including making appropriate conjectures/generalizations and being able to prove such statements.
  • Interpret results for the purpose of decision making.

Physics

Iona’s physics programs will prepare you to use the tools of science to expand your knowledge of nature and the forces that impact life on Earth. Through theory and experimentation, mathematics, and computer science, you will gain a solid foundation in the principles and practice of both classical and modern physics. You will learn to use your scientific skills as a force for good, advancing leadership, service, and civic responsibility.

The physics minor provides you with a firm grounding in the principal fields of classical physics: mechanics, heat, light, electricity, and magnetism. You’ll also gain an understanding of the elements of modern physics: relativity, quantum theory, particle physics and thermodynamics.

Teacher Certification

The five-year combined BA/MST and BS/MST programs in Mathematics/Adolescent Education prepare students for teaching mathematics in grades 7-12. These programs lead to a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Teaching degree, as well as New York State initial certification to teach Adolescent Education/Mathematics. Students complete core curriculum and Mathematics major requirements for the undergraduate degree, thereby obtaining a strong foundation in mathematics. They enter the Education graduate program in the fifth year to complete their preparation as professional educators. Faculty in the Mathematics and Physics Department work with faculty in the Education Department to advise BA/MST and BS/MST students throughout their 5 years at Iona. For details on admission to this program, please consult the chair of the Mathematics and Physics Department and the Graduate Coordinator for the Education Department.
