Objectives

The Philosophy Department is committed to the cultivation of rigorous thinking and respect for truths. Our courses challenge students to grapple with some of the most profound ideas of the modern (17th century-late 19th century) and contemporary worlds. Students will explore the history of philosophy by examining philosophical problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics. But more than “canons” (collections of important work done by philosophers), philosophy teaches us how to think. In addition to developing a strong knowledge base, students will learn to do philosophy on their own. As such, our courses encourage students to apply philosophical analysis to contemporary topics, such as the nature of scientific explanation, the relationship between mind and brain, issues in animal ethics, challenges in ethical leadership, the development of self-respect, and so on. By taking courses from our department, students will gain a set of “thinking tools” to hone their critical, analytical, and evaluative abilities - skills transferable to fields such as law, business, mathematics, politics, the natural and social sciences, literature, and the fine arts.

Our program offers rigorous preparation for advanced studies in philosophy, as well as a solid foundation for pursuing graduate study and careers in a wide range of academic and professional areas.
