Educational Leadership, MSEd (0828.00)


The master’s degree program in Educational Leadership prepares school personnel to function in administrative and supervisory capacities. The program’s faculty include current and former superintendents, school principals and administrators who are examples of the spirit of the program. We prepare our candidates to serve as assistant principals, departmental chairpersons, pupil personnel directors and principals. The program is designed to assist the administrator or supervisor in:

  • developing a comprehensive understanding of supervision and administration;
  • integrating theory with practice;
  • applying evolving knowledge and skills in an educational environment; and
  • extending differentiated learning in a chosen specialization.

Candidates who complete this program will have met the academic requirements for the NYS initial certificate in school leadership. Upon completion of this degree and passing of the NYSTCE School Building Leader Exam, Iona will recommend the student to New York State for initial certification as a school building leader (SBL). Typically, graduates are employed as school principals, assistant principals, department chairpersons and pupil personnel directors.

Note:


All candidates, regardless of previous administrative experience, are required to complete six credits of internship. Evidence of a minimum of three years of full time, paid, approved teaching and/or supervisory and/ or administrative and/or pupil personnel service. Substitute positions will not be credited.

For Master of Science in Educational Leadership program:

  • Possession of a New York State Provisional or Initial Teaching certificate.
  • Evidence of a minimum of three years of full time, paid, approved teaching and/or supervisory and/or administrative and/or pupil personnel service. Substitute positions will not be credited.

All programs:

  • A brief, typewritten autobiography speaking to the candidate’s family background, educational background, work experiences and the reasons for choosing teaching as a profession.
  • An interview with a member of the education department.
  • A program plan of study signed by the education department program adviser.
  • A dispositional commitment signed by the candidate.
