Requirements for the MA in English

Area of Study

Foundations of Language and Literature: 6 Credits

Dependent on course content (Two courses, 3 credits each)

Classic Periods: 6 Credits

Dependent on course content (Two courses, 3 credits each)

American and Modern Literature: 6 Credits

Dependent on course content (Two courses, 3 credits each)

Electives in English: 12 Credits

(Four courses, 3 credits each)

Select Option A or B:

Option A: 3 or 6 Credits

Culminating Experience

Option B: 6 Credits

Two additional courses and a special research project included in one of the final courses taken in the program. **

Total: 33 or 36 credits.

* Students opting to write a thesis will be required to register for ENG 981 and work under the guidance of a thesis director.

** Students should consult in advance the professor with whom they wish to complete the project.

Note:

  1. Ordinarily the maximum number of summer session credits applicable to the degree program is 12.
  2. A student must also satisfy the foreign language requirement before completing the degree.
