EDU 977 - Observation and Student Teaching for Childhood and Special Education (Grades 1-6)

The student teaching experiences and seminar are designed to facilitate the movement from teacher candidate to practicing professional. This structured college supervised teaching experience is provided using the specialized knowledge, skills and dispositions needed for working effectively with all children  in Grades 1-6 and students with disabilities in grades 1-6. As part of the student teaching experience, teacher candidates will be required to observe and participate during the entire semester in full-time experiences in the Grade 1 through Grade 6 general classrooms and with students with special needs. It will provide an opportunity for the candidates to discuss their student teaching experiences, to explore multiple approaches to classroom management, curriculum, instruction and assessment, and to investigate specific educational issues in greater depth. College supervisors assigned to student teachers will provide supervision. During student teaching, the teacher candidate is assigned to a qualified grade 1 to grade 6 students with disabilities cooperating teacher(s) in the field and is closely supervised by a college supervisor in the teacher candidate’s field. Placements are determined based on pre-student teaching fieldwork experiences and availability of qualified placements. A weekly seminar takes place on campus. Applications for enrollment must be submitted to the Education Department by October 1 in the Fall semester and February 15 in the Spring semester. Taskstream ® submission is required.
