EDU 725 - Foundations of Language and Literacy for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children


This course will provide students with an overview of research, perspectives, and intervention approaches for the development of language and literacy in young deaf and hard of hearing children. Students will engage in critical analysis of research from the fields of linguistics, psycholinguistics, language development, bilingual development, speech-language pathology, and aural rehabilitation in order to understand the evidence-base in support of early language exposure for DHH children. Class meetings will incorporate lecture, discussion, case-based learning, and role plays in order to prepare students to provide high-quality, individualized and culturally-responsive intervention to children and their families. Seminar sessions will be led by leading experts and specialists from the New York City area.
