CSD 601 - American Sign Language for Working with Deaf/Hard of Hearing Children and Families

This course will provide an introduction to American Sign Language with a specific focus on the vocabulary students will need to provide early intervention and early childhood education services to young deaf or hard of hearing children and their families. The course will also provide a foundation in the basic grammatical structure of ASL so that course-completers will be able to provide basic ASL instruction to the families of deaf or hard of hearing children and support parents as they work to create a language- and literacy-rich environment for their deaf or hard of hearing children. Students will learn theory and practice related to the use of visual communication for DHH children who do not have access to spoken language, will learn counseling techniques to educate parents about the importance of accessible language, and will use these techniques in mock counseling sessions. Furthermore, students will become well-versed in resources to which they can refer families so that families can deepen their knowledge of, and skill with using, ASL. Students will also learn techniques for using visual communication effectively in situations where they lack the required vocabulary.
