SCS 385 - Counseling Individuals with Communication Disorders and Their Families


Counseling individuals and their families/caregivers about communication disorders and related conditions and providing education to foster positive outcomes falls within the realm of responsibility of audiologists and speech-language pathologists.  In this course, students will learn to listen and communicate effectively with the families and individuals they serve, learn counseling theories relevant to clinical practice, develop and adapt basic counseling techniques, and become familiar with grief and loss theories and their implications for individuals with communication disorders. Students will also increase their knowledge base about different linguistic and cultural diversity and will learn to adapt counseling techniques to a multicultural population.
