HST 250 - The Age of Iona: Celtic Monasticism from its Golden Age through the Viking Age Medieval Iona: An outsize influence for over 400 years by a small community on a small island on the edge of the map of the “Christian world.” This course explores the origins, establishment, and enduring influence of early medieval Celtic monasticism between 400 CE and 1100 CE with particular focus on the renowned and highly influential monastery of Iona. Through an exploration of material culture, written historical sources, and archaeological evidence, this course will provide an overview of the important cultural, artistic, intellectual, political, and economic aspects of Celtic monasteries from Ireland to Ukraine. Lecture Credits: 3 Prerequisite: ENG 120 or Honors Status Offered in Fall & Spring
