ENG 320 - Modern Comedy

What makes us laugh? What does laughter tell us about the cultural norms of a society and its members? This course will survey a variety of comic works through a number of different critical lenses, including history, geography, genre, and performance. At its completion, students should be able to reflect and engage with comedies with particular attention to the historical, political, and cultural contexts from which they emerge and are received, the forms and structures of comic works, and the ways in which comedies make our societies and ourselves intelligible to us.
