EDU 655 - Comprehensive Language and Literacy Development of Readers and Writers

This course explores the strategic use of various text genres in literacy teaching. The course begins with a review of language acquisition theories to provide a deeper understanding of the language learning and comprehension processes across different developmental phases. Participants will appreciate the importance of becoming adept in various language systems (i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, orthography, and lexicology) and will understand how that awareness connects to their ability to select appropriate texts for use with instruction that is both challenging and differentiated for students. The course addresses the distinct challenges faced by English Learners (ELs) and students with language-based and learning disabilities in literacy development.
