Objectives
The Philosophy Department seeks to inspire students to confront central questions about knowledge, truth, and values, to instill in students the habit of critical thinking, and to enhance their writing, reading, and speaking abilities. Our students have the opportunity to explore the history of philosophy, to confront a full-range of philosophical problems in central areas of metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics, to apply philosophical analysis to contemporary issues such as the nature of scientific explanation, the relationship between mind and brain, animal rights, respect and self-respect, ethical leadership, creativity, environmental ethics, politics, law, and social justice. In such ways, we challenge our students to interpret, evaluate, and criticize with argument and evidence the fundamental questions of human life. The major in philosophy fully prepares students for graduate studies in the field and also provides a pathway to a wide range of career options in the humanities, social sciences, the arts, law, business, or public policy, as well as for service to their communities as critical thinkers and clear communicators. By fostering independent and adaptable thinking that is essential to both the realization of professional opportunity and community engagement and fostering intellectual inquiry towards lifelong learning, Philosophy uniquely manifests the mission of the University as an extension of the legacy of the Christian Brothers and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition.
