Formal Admission to the Social Work Major
As a CSWE (Council on Social Work Education) accredited baccalaureate social work program, formal admission to the social work major includes both an application to the major and a pre-admission interview and generally takes place in the spring semester of sophomore year.
Process
- Sophomores already identified as social work majors in the Peoplesoft System, should apply for formal admission to the program by completing the online Application to the Social Work Major accessed from the Department’s webpages.
- Within two weeks of receipt of the application, the Social Work Department will reach out to schedule a pre-admission interview.
- The student application and interview are reviewed by the full Social Work faculty and formal admission decisions are made; students are granted full admission or provisional admission to the major.
- Provisional admission may be granted for one semester in circumstances where a student does not meet all eligibility requirements at the time of application and is contingent on successful completion of social work courses in the fall semester with minimum grades of B-. Admission status is changed from provisional to full upon meeting this requirement. Students whose admission status remains unchanged at the end of fall semester will be counseled towards a different major.
- Notification of the formal admission status is sent to the student by email with the Advising Center being copied.
*Students who have not yet been identified as social work majors in the Peoplesoft system should begin the process by requesting that the Advising Center declare them as social work majors.
Major Requirements (11 courses, 4 credits each):
Index Requirement
Due to CSWE accreditation requirements, all of the required courses in social work must be completed with a minimum grade of “C.” In order to continue in the major, students must repeat a course in which they earn less than a “C.” Courses may only be repeated once.
Students interested in seeking Advanced Standing in a CSWE-accredited MSW Program must earn minimum grades of B in social work major courses.
Note:
Many of the required core courses (and courses in related disciplines) function as prerequisites for courses in the major. Students should share their interest in the social work major with their academic advisors as soon as they are considering it so as to ensure that pre-requisite courses are completed in a timely manner.
