This course is a fundamental introduction to systemic thinking and theoretical concepts in the field of marriage and family therapy (MFT). It will provide an extensive overview of the theoretical foundations and paradigm shifts in the field, from its historical roots to postmodernism. The course uses various educational approaches, where students will be introduced to systems theory and MFT underpinnings. Students will use clinical case documentation based on the nationally defined MFT core competencies. The course will explore “self as therapist,” as well as themes of how to navigate focus of clinical attention. Additionally, basic MFT and systems theory vocabulary, themes, and components will be addressed in beginning preparation for the national licensing exam. Lastly, students participate and engagement with other professional disciplines at Iona University in the Interprofessional Education (IPE) foundations Modules and other experiential activities. The aim of the IPE models and experiential activities are to enhance MFT students’ development of competencies in multidisciplinary and interprofessional collaborative practices.
