Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers major programs in biochemistry and chemistry. The enhanced degree option of an ACS-certified BS is available for both biochemistry and chemistry majors. This option provides a deeper understanding of the discipline and is often an advantage when seeking employment or admission to graduate or professional programs. The department also offers two bachelors/masters combined degree programs, one in Chemistry and Education (BS/MST), and the second in Chemistry and Computer Science (BS/MS). Students majoring in chemistry or biochemistry can choose an accelerated MBA program through the LaPenta School of Business. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department also offers a chemistry minor.

Objectives

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Iona College is dedicated to academic excellence within the heritage of the Christian Brothers and in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Our department is committed to providing students with a strong foundation in the theory and practice of chemical science and to preparing them to think critically and ethically about the challenges and opportunities they will encounter in pursuit of their career choices.

Chemistry or Biochemistry Majors for Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, Pre-Veterinary, and Pre-Pharmacy Students

A major in chemistry or biochemistry is excellent preparation for a career in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry or other health and science professions. Coursework for pre-professional students should be chosen with the aid of faculty advisors. Consult the Department Chair for more information about your desired pre-professional program.

Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Chemistry and Biochemistry Majors

In addition to the chemistry or biochemistry major requirements, students preparing for medical or dental careers must take:

Pre-medical and pre-dental students are strongly encouraged to complete coursework in biochemistry and molecular biology, including CHM 321 , CHM 323 , CHM 422 , CHM 420 , BIO 211 , and BIO 480  /BIO 481  . These courses fulfill requirements and electives in the BS in Biochemistry program. Consult your major advisor for assistance in selecting a major program and electives.

Pre-Pharmacy Chemistry and Biochemistry Majors

In addition to the chemistry or biochemistry major requirements, students preparing for careers in pharmacy must take:

Pre-pharmacy students may choose chemistry or biochemistry major electives that enhance their understanding of drugs, medicine, and their interactions in biochemical systems. A minor in biology is a popular choice for pre-pharmacy students majoring in chemistry.

Five Year BS/MST Program for Chemistry/Education

This five year combined BS/MST program in Chemistry/Adolescent Education prepares students for teaching grades 7-12. The program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science in Teaching degree as well as New York State initial certification to teach Adolescent Education/Chemistry. Students complete core curriculum and Chemistry major requirements for the undergraduate degree, thereby obtaining a strong foundation in physical science. They enter the Education graduate program in the fifth year to complete their preparation as professional educators. Faculty in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department work with faculty in the Education Department to advise BS/MST students throughout their 5 years at Iona. For details on admission to this program, please consult the chair of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and the Graduate Coordinator for the Education Department.

Five Year BS/MS Program for Chemistry/Computer Science

The five year combined BS/MS program in Chemistry/Computer Science prepares students for a variety of careers in scientific industry or government, as well as for advanced study in either chemistry or computer science. Chemistry majors who are interested in this program should enroll in CS 201  and MTH 231  during their first two semesters at Iona. For details about this problem, please consult the chair of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and the chair of the Computer Science Department.

Continuation in Chemistry and Biochemistry Coursework and Programs

Students are required to earn a minimum of a C grade in CHM 110  in order to take upper-level chemistry courses.
