The Department of Philosophy offers a major program in philosophy (HEGIS 1509) leading to a BA degree. In addition, it offers basic core courses and a number of advanced electives. The department also offers a minor in philosophy.

Faculty

Chair: A. Eodice; Professors: A. Eodice, C. Perricone; Professors Emeriti: L. Azar, R. Donovan, J. Giles, W. O’Neill, G. Pepper; Associate Professors: M. Jordan; Assistant Professor: C. Rathkopf, A. Suen; Visiting Assistant Professor: T. Fassenbender.

Objectives

The philosophy major:

  • Builds on and develops the philosophy core, i.e., PHL 110 , which is a survey course in the history of philosophy focusing on the areas of critical thinking, metaphysics, epistemology, and aesthetics, and PHL 210 , a survey course in the history and problems of moral philosophy. The core in philosophy is obviously not only consistent with the mission of the philosophy department itself, but it is also consistent with all the aspects of the College’s mission.
  • The structured major offers flexibility to both current and future faculty and students.
  • The structured major is consistent and competitive with major programs offered at other colleges and universities, which are either similar or different in rank in comparison to Iona College.
  • The structured major supports the legitimacy of the Iona philosophy department by communicating high academic standards to current and prospective students.
  • The structured major meets the expectations of philosophy graduate program admissions requirements, which is particularly important to those students who intend to pursue graduate degrees in philosophy. At the same time, the structured major does not at all have a negative impact on those students who intend to pursue careers or other professional programs outside philosophy.
