Speech Communication Studies

The Department of Speech Communication Studies offers two major programs, the BA in speech communication (HEGIS 1506), and the BA in speech/language pathology and audiology (HEGIS 1220). In addition, the department offers courses in oral communication to meet College core requirements. Courses tailored to meet the needs of students majoring in SCS or in other disciplines are also offered.

Objectives

The major in speech communication is designed for students to develop the ability to effectively communicate in their personal relationships and professional occupations. The major prepares students for careers in communication, consulting, advocacy and others.

The major in speech and language pathology and audiology is designed to provide students with a pre-professional education and experience in theoretical and clinical aspects of speech pathology and audiology. The program is structured to comply with current guidelines specified by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA).

Index Requirement

SCS 364  must be completed with a grade of C+ or better. To continue the major, students who fail the earn a C+ or better in SCS 364  must repeat the course before taking additional major courses.
