Students who choose to major in biochemistry and earn ACS certification must complete the following requirements.

Certification Requirements
ACS certification requires completion of 400 laboratory hours in CHM at the 200 level or higher.
- Biochemistry Elective 1 must be chosen from the following list of Advanced Electives.
- Biochemistry Elective 2 must be chosen from: CHM 441 or CHM 442
Note
ACS requires completion of 400 laboratory hours in CHM at the 200 level or higher. Electives should be chosen with the aid of an advisor based upon the student’s interest and goals.
* Continuation in the Biochemistry/Chemistry Major
A minimum of a C grade in CHM 110 - General Chemistry 2 is required in order to take chemistry and biochemistry courses above the 100-level. A student who repeats CHM 209 - Organic Chemistry I must earn a minimum grade of C in the second attempt in order to remain in a Chemistry or Biochemistry major.
A student who does not earn a C or higher in CHM 110 may retake the course to remain a degree candidate in the major. A student who does not earn a C or higher in the second attempt of CHM 110 and/or CHM 209 must meet with the Department Chair and the Advising Center to help the student choose a major that will lead to successful degree completion. If the student requires further assistance, the chair will refer the student to the Dean.
