Arts and Languages

The Arts and Languages Department offers a broad range of courses in the fine and performing arts, languages, cultures, and literatures from around the globe and from the ancient world to the present. The department offers a BA in Arts Leadership as well as a BA in Spanish. The Arts Leadership major is an interdisciplinary degree that trains students interested in a career in arts and arts administration. Having students concentrate in one field in fine and performing arts – Dance, Music, Theatre or Visual Arts – and take classes in Business and Communication Studies, the degree prepares its graduates for jobs in art/performance centers, educational institutions, theatres, and public venues. The Spanish major, composed of 27 credits, offers a variety of Spanish language courses for the professions, Hispanic literature, and culture to prepare students to succeed in a globalized world. The Languages faculty also works closely with Iona’s Education Department to prepare students for careers in teaching, and Spanish may be pursued as a concentration in BA, BS, or BA/MST degree programs in Education.  The department offers minors in Music History, Music Performance, Dance, Theatre, and Visual Arts, all composed of 18 credits, as well as a minor in Spanish and a minor in Italian, both composed of 12 credits. Students in the department may take advantage of the many opportunities for study abroad experiences led by faculty, service-learning elements in courses, research on special topics, and internships.  The department also offers a wide variety of innovative courses that are part of Iona University’s Core Curriculum and are open to non-majors and non-minors.
