  • To fulfill social science requirement: two courses in ECO/ENT/POL/PSY/SOC (BUS courses not accepted)

Requirements for New York State Initial Teaching Certificate


Requirements to obtain a New York State Initial Teaching Certificate include the following, as documented in candidate’s TEACH account:

  1. Passing of the following New York State Teacher Certification Exams:
    • Educating All Students Test (EAS)
    • Content Specialty Test (CST)
  2. Completion of Child Abuse Detection and Reporting, School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE), and Dignity for All Students Act workshops
  3. Fingerprinting

The New York State Education Department is continually in the process of changing regulations for teacher certification. It is the candidate’s responsibility to be aware of all certification requirements and keep up-to-date with any changes.

Continuation in the Program


Any education course, including student teaching, in which a student earns less than a “C” grade must be repeated. Additionally, Adolescent Education candidates must have a ‘C’ or higher in at least 30 credits in their content area courses.

Throughout the program, teacher candidates will be expected to demonstrate the dispositions for effective teachers that are stated in the department’s Student Learning Outcomes. Any failure to uphold the dispositions for effective teaching and the ethical standards for educators in the profession will result in dismissal from the department.

Enrollment in any education course at the junior or senior level for undergraduate programs and the graduate level for five-year programs is open only to students who are fully declared as enrolled in an education degree program.
