University Core

Courses that fulfill both University Core Options and Major Requirements

Major Requirements

The social work major courses are highly sequenced and unfold across four semesters with formal program admission/entry in the fall semester of junior year. Since the social work major is structured and supported by a cohort learning community model, students who are reasonably certain they will be majoring in social work are encouraged to refrain from taking major courses outside of the designated sequence below, but are most welcome to take elective social work courses prior to starting the major in earnest.

Admission to the Program

The eligibility criteria for program admission includes the following:

  • Completion of a minimum of 54 credits by the time the student formally enters the major in fall of junior year

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3

  • Submission of a formal Application to the Social Work Major

Due to accreditation requirements, admission to the undergraduate social work program is a multi-faceted process, which includes the following:

  1. Student shares their interest in majoring in social work their assigned academic advisor from the University Advising Center.

  1. Academic advisor reviews requirements for the social work major with the student and then notifies the Undergraduate Social Work Program Director of the student’s interest.

  1. Undergraduate Social Work Program Director schedules an initial interview with the student interested in majoring in social work.

  1. If the major appears to be a good fit for the student, the Undergraduate Program Director informs the advisor that the student is ready to be declared a social work major in the Peoplesoft system and shares a link to the Application to the Social Work Major.

  1. Applications to the social work major are collectively reviewed by the social work faculty and a determination about formal admission (full, provisional, or declined) is rendered by the faculty.

  1. Formal email notification regarding the admission determination is sent to the student by the Undergraduate Program Director.

Index Requirement

Due to accreditation requirements, all of the required courses in social work must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. In order to continue in the major, students must repeat a course in which they earn less than a “C”.

Note:

Many of the required core courses (and courses in related disciplines) function as prerequisites for courses in the major. Students should share their interest in the social work major with their academic advisors as soon as they are considering it so as to ensure that pre-requisite courses are completed in a timely manner.  Though not required for the major, students who are considering social work are highly encouraged to explore the profession by taking SOW 2210  Introduction to Social Work during the freshman and sophomore years.
