Institute for Thomas Paine Studies

The Institute for Thomas Paine Studies (ITPS) is an expanding interdisciplinary organization that supports the study of early American history. The ITPS is home to the Thomas Paine National Historical Association Archive (TPNHA), a vast collection of materials including items related to Paine, his contemporaries, and the history of the TPNHA organization through the twentieth century. The ITPS seeks to strengthen the academic field of early American studies as well as public history and digital humanities efforts. Our goal is to encourage and advance Iona students, our local, national, and international communities, and the historical profession.

These initiatives include research fellowships and internships, conferences, seminars, workshop series, and exhibits featuring the TPNHA collection. Thanks to the generous support of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, the James Hervey Johnson Educational Trust, and the Provost Office’s Strategic Initiatives, highlights include the 2018 conference, “Revolutionary Texts in a Digital Age: Thomas Paine’s Publishing Networks, Past and Present,” the Gardiner Archival Fellowship program, and membership in the McNeil Center Consortium at the University of Pennsylvania. The ITPS also supports the Text Attribution Project (TAP), which is focused on using digital techniques alongside traditional research methods to determine what documents were written by Paine and others in his communication networks. Our community partnerships for events and other collaborations include the Omohundro Institute, the McNeil Center, the Thomas Paine Cottage Museum, Rev250, the Bergen County Historical Association, and the South Hampton Museum.

The ITPS is also an important home for undergraduate intellectual and professional development at Iona. The work of Thomas Paine as a writer, activist, economist, and advocate provide students with a framework in which to advance their own efforts in the related fields of public history (such as museum studies, media, and education), digital communication, technology and innovation, law, publishing, and politics. The Thomas Paine Studies Minor  and Thomas Paine ICT  will benefit students interested in any of these fields by situating them uniquely in the job market and will also provide a bridge into employment, internship, and scholarship opportunities at the ITPS and its consortia organizations. For more information, please see our website, https://www.iona.edu/microsites/institute-for-thomas-paine-studies.aspx, or follow us on twitter @TheITPS. For questions about the ITPS, please contact ITPS Director Dr. Nora Slonimsky.
